Types of Dog Breeds

Dogs are known as man’s best friend. But which dog will you call your best friend? With over 340 different types of dogs recognized worldwide, it can be tricky choosing which dog is best for you. You’re not alone.

Whether you prefer low-maintenance dogs or a dog you can pamper like royalty, you’ll find the right dog for you in this comprehensive list with all types of dogs.

Types of Dogs | Different Dog Species

People want dogs for different reasons. Popular dogs, for instance, are beloved for being the best for families, guarding, or companionship. In fact, one of the most asked questions by soon-to-be dog parents is the Labrador Retriever vs. Golden Retriever debate.

Another factor people consider when choosing dogs is their affordability and upkeep. Some enthusiasts have to stick to a budget when adding a pup to their household. To others, money is no object. They’re able to choose one of the expensive dog breeds.

No matter the circumstance you find yourself in, the right breed for you is out there waiting for your love.

Which Dog Breed Is Right for You?

Before rushing to adopt a dog, ask yourself which breed works best for you and your lifestyle. From maintenance to behavior and appearance, here’s what you need to know.

Low Maintenance Dog Breeds

Sometimes you just need your dog to be a little self-sufficient. You’ll find this with big dogs that don’t shed. Say goodbye to the days of puppy fur floating around the house.

Other options exist too. There are calm dogs that don’t shed, making for easygoing members of your family. Also, you may prefer dogs that won’t stink up your home. These dog breeds don’t smell and won’t leave you with that wet dog odor.

However, if you’d like to kill two birds with one stone, going for dog breeds that don’t smell or shed, like Schnauzers, is best. You might also want to consider guard dog breeds that don’t shed or dog breeds with low separation anxiety.

Or how about dog breeds that stay small forever? Or dog breeds that fit under airplane seats?

Some people love a dog with a smushed face or want a small dog that doesn’t bark or shed or even a lazy dog that doesn’t shed. Or perhaps a tracker dog breed?

Fast Dog Breeds

If high-energy is on your wishlist for your furry companion, there are plenty of canines who will happily run with you. The fastest dog breeds are ideal for active owners and require lots of space for running around.

Emotional Support Dog Breeds

If you desire a dog for emotional support, there are some great breed options. Labradors and Golden retrievers are the usual choices, but Yorkies, Poodles, and Beagles are also perfect for the job.

Least and Most Aggressive Dog Breeds

Whether you have small children or are a first-time dog owner, you’ll need a friendly dog that is easier to train. As such, one (or two!) of the least aggressive dog breeds would be a good addition to your family.

Aggressive dogs like the American Staffordshire Terrier and similar breeds like the American Bulldog Great Pyrenees mix are best suited for more experienced dog owners. While the German shepherd is typically included as one of the least aggressive breeds of dogs, it can be aggressive without proper socialization. So, it’s worth training them from a young age to get along well with humans and other animals.

Any dog can be added to the dangerous breeds list if they’re not properly trained or socialized. But if you’re looking for naturally well-behaved dogs, taking home a Beagle or Boston Terrier might be a good choice. Another breed that is often thought of as dangerous if not handled by an experienced owner is a Pit Bull. And make sure to check out the worst behaved dog breeds as well.

That said, while some dogs look like Pit Bulls but aren’t, they can still be dangerous and aggressive. Rottweilers are a classic example.

Picking Breeds by Their Looks

Besides personality, temperance, and maintenance, some people choose dogs based on their appearance. From unusual dogs to the classically beautiful, you’ll find a breed that suits your preferences.

If you like unconventional dogs, you may appreciate weird dog breeds with quirky looks. In contrast, the most beautiful dog breeds will captivate you with their elegance.

Maybe you’re drawn to striking blue eyes or distinctive coats. If that’s the case, these blue-eyed dog breeds and spotted dog breeds could be what you’re looking for. Interestingly, some dog lovers want ugly dog breeds for their delightfully unconventional looks. Similarly, bald dog breeds look quite unique in their quirky, hairless way.

Overall, different people are drawn to different aesthetics, and the same holds true for dog enthusiasts. Whether you’re captivated by the tallest dogs that project confidence or are keen on the wilder side of life by getting a wolf dog breed, you’ll find them all right here. Or perhaps you would like a dog that looks like Benji?

Black and White Dogs

For beautifully thick, black fur, check out these black dog breeds. Their black coat gives them a strikingly regal look that commands attention.

Alternatively, check out the white American Bulldog Great Pyrenees mix and American Bully or American Bulldog for a snow-white theme. Some big white dog breeds include the well-known Great Pyrenees and American Bull Terrier. For the perfect trifecta of big, white, and fluffy, consider these big white fluffy dog breeds.

Small Dogs

If you live in an apartment, the smartest small dogs will fit in just fine. For a tiny pup to cuddle with, consider the smallest fluffy dogs with their adorable and affectionate natures.

Unique Breeds

You’ve hit the jackpot for dogs that look as unique as their names. The Chow Chow Husky mix is a fluffy friend with a sometimes wrinkled face. The petite Teacup Bichon Frise, also known as bichon à poil frisé in French, is a uniquely adorable ball of fur.

With its distinctly blue merle coat pattern, Border Collie Merles stun with their bluey-gray shades. The rare and often stocky-looking Bear Coat Shar Pei is known for its thick, bear-like coat, much like other dog breeds that look like bears.

In addition, the Zuchon breed looks like a teddy bear and delights owners with its adorable frame. Another cute, teddy bear-like dog is the Pomapoo breed. Or how about the border collie mix with husky?

Picking Breeds by Their Origin

Going beyond aesthetics, some dog enthusiasts prefer to choose a canine based on its origins. Asian dog breeds like the Shiba Inu and Akita embody specific cultural values. You’ll find a loyal and courageous friend in these pups.

Also, some of the best Indian dog breeds, such as the fit and healthy Kombai and Chippiparai, are known for being intelligent, fast, and strong.

Dogs are often considered man’s best friend, and not without reason. They are loyal, protective, and make affectionate pets. Two popular breeds in the United States are the American Bully and the American Bulldog. While they share some similarities, some key differences set them apart.  Let’s review the American bully vs American bulldog – which …
