WTF Wednesday: Resource Guarding Edition

24 Jul

According to the manufacturer, the “Beware of the Dog” game will ‘keep the children giggling and the parents shrieking’.

That’s right, kids, it’s all fun and games until little Johnny loses half of his face when he tries this with Fluffy in real life.

Some products, like that wierd-ass poop auger, are annoying and stupid but fundamentally harmless. This toy is wrong on so many levels, it’s scary. Whoever invented this piece of crap has never heard of product liability law. Let’s hope they don’t find out the hard way, after a kid gets hurt and a dog dies.

I can look at this two ways. I was born at a time when children’s games, toys and stories were NOT 100% politically correct, safe or learning enhancing and sometimes they even conformed to sexist stereotypes. But in their own ways some of them were still fun and enjoyable.

The pissy bull dog. A staple of Warner Brothers cartoons. Why? Because in the early part of the US movie era bull breeds were common and easy to draw. Bugs Bunny runs by and the bull dog is waiting to chase him. But Bugs has an anvil rigged and ready to drop on the dogs head.

Okay we can see gratuitous violence. Promotion of animal cruelty? A classic cartoon???

I own two “pit bull type” dogs. I find this toy to be pretty funny. I wish the dog looked a bit more non-descript breed but it’s not up there with BSL.

As both a professional dog trainer and insurance inspector, I’ve seen the real-life results when anyone, child or adult, plays this “game” with dogs other than the plastic variety. The company handling the game is Universal Games and can be contacted at http://universitygames.com/contactus.asp
Perhaps those of us who recognize the potential danger of this game should do just that.

No, just no. Are you kidding me? What idiot thought this was a good idea? You don’t ever, EVER, encourage kids to stick their fingers in a dog’s bowl. That is just a recipe for disaster.
